Finding Articles:
The following are linked from UCSB's Article Indexes & Databases page. For each of these, search the article index. If you find a citation for an article you want, click on "UCeLinks" to see if UCSB has a subscription (either in print or online) for the title you want.
In these databases you can truncate your search terms. This means that you can type in part of the world and then add a symbol (usually the * but it can vary) to get words with alternate endings. For example, "religio*" would find items that have the following words: religious; religion; reliogiosity. Or "plural*" would find: plurality; pluralist; pluralism.
Academic Search Complete
- Multidisciplinary database
- Indexes the major journals (English-only) from most academic fields
- Use * to truncate
- Contains a fair amount of full-text
- If the full-text is available in Academic Search Complete, you can email yourself the article
America: History & Life
- Covers the history of the United States and Canada
- Includes abstracts for articles, books, book chapters, and book reviews
- Some links to full-text, but not very many
- Use * to truncate
Historical Abstracts
- Covers the history of the world except the United States and Canada
- Use the same as you use America: History & Life
Index Islamicus
- Includes the widest amount of journals and books concerning Islam and the Middle East
- Includes materials in many languages
- Use * to truncate
- Search using multiple versions for transliterated terms
Sociological Abstracts
- Mostly U.S., but also some global coverage of sociology
- Includes abstracts for articles, books, and book chapters
- Use * to truncate
Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
- Covers political science, international relations, public administration/policy, and law
- Use * to truncate
Statistical Sources:
Statistical sources about religion in the United States can be difficult to locate. The US Census is a great site for statistics about the population and other demographic questions, but the US Census does not ask questions about religion.

- Has some statistical information about religious affiliation in the United States
- Cannot guarantee accuracy
Association of Religion Data Archives
- Contains data about religious affiliation in the United States
- Cannot guarantee accuracy
Statisical Abstract of the United States
- Most comprehensive collection of statistics about the U.S.
- Draws information from the US Census as well as other sources
- Does not include information about religious affiliation
Religious Tolerance.org
- A useful site for an overview of religions
