General Information

INT 1 is a one unit, Pass/No Pass course designed to teach the nature of research and the role of the library in the research process. No textbook. Class attendance is required every week.

INT 1 introduces students to the resources and services of the UCSB Library. Students will come away from this course with an understanding of how to integrate library resources and materials into the academic research process.

Evaluation of resources is an important component of this course. While completing the course assignments, you will be evaluating the resources you are learning to use and the results of your searches, and you will be able to apply these skills to your own research needs.

Class Goals:

Learn basic library research skills, tools, and resources
Understand information organization
Understand the value of information
Begin to think more critically about information, and become better information consumers

Outcomes: After completing this course students will be able to:

Develop a research topic.
Find and evaluate books and journal articles.
Navigate the library building.
Create and refine search strategies using the online catalog, article indexes and other electronic resources.
Compare and contrast types of information.
Recognize and identify bias, intended audience, and purpose of a given resource.
Document sources in an appropriate citation style.
