INT 1: Introduction to Library Research

General Information:

Int 1 is a one credit hour, pass/no pass course designed to teach the nature of research and the role of the library in the research process. Class meets once a week in Davidson Library, Room 1575. Class attendance is mandatory. There are weekly assignments but no textbook. Some INT 1 classes use Moodle, a campus-wide trial course management system.

Course Goals (this class will help you):

  • Become familiar with the UCSB Libraries' resources
  • Learn basic research skills, including how to find books, scholarly articles, and websites appropriate for research papers
  • Learn to evaluate sources

Student Outcomes (after completing this course, you will have the skills to):

  • Select a research topic and write an effective research statement
  • Create and refine search strategies using the online catalog, article indexes, and other electronic resources
  • Distinguish between popular and scholarly works
  • Think critically about information and its sources
  • Document sources in an appropriate citation style

Course requirements include:

  • Weekly attendance
  • Activation of U-Mail account
  • Passing the midterm
  • Satisfactory completion of assignments

Computing Facilities:

INT 1 students have access to the Instructional Computing labs in Phelps Hall. To log on to IC computers, use your UCSBnetID and enter “INT 1” and the name of your instructor when the dialog box prompts you. IC lab hours vary during the quarter.

Student Responsibilities:
