Substance Searching: Names, Molecular Formulas and Displaying Substance Records
Quiz Questions
Note: Check ALL correct answers to each question. There may be more than one correct answer.
Question 1: When you use "Locate by Substance Identifier" in SciFinder Scholar (SFS) or search for substances with a Chemical Identifier in SciFinder Web (SFW) using a chemical name or CAS Registry Number, what can you expect to find?
- _____ At most, a single substance with that name or Registry Number.
- _____ All substances with the same formula as the one named, including isotopically substituted variations and stereoisomers.
- _____ The parent record for the substance, as well as all multi-component substances in which it is a component.
- _____ The parent record, plus the record for all polymers of which the substance is a monomer.
- _____ If the substance is a protein or polynucleotide, the parent record plus all equivalent proteins or polynucleotides from other organisms.
Question 2: In the default display of a large set of substance records, the records with the largest number of references are usually towards the bottom. Why is that so?
- _____ SciFinder sorts the records from least to most number of references.
- _____ The records with the most number of references are placed at the bottom to force you to scan the entire answer set before you go to the most "popular" substances.
- _____ SciFinder sorts the Registry Numbers from newest to oldest, and older substances are more likely to be common ones, or more thoroughly researched than new ones.
- ______ The records are sorted by similarity, which groups the most popular substances at the bottom.
Question 3: What does a Deleted Registry Number in a substance record signify?
- _____ A CAS indexer assigned a Registry Number to a susbstance without realizing that the substance was identical to another substance already in the system.
- _____ In the records for the references where the deleted RN first appeared, it has been replaced by the correct RN..
- _____ All records containing this Registry Number have been deleted.
- _____ When you search the name or current Registry Number of the substance, the Deleted Registry Number will automatically be searches as well, and vice versa.
Question 4: In SciFinder Scholar, predicted properties of a substance may be...
- _____ Viewed as part of the main substance record.
- _____ Displayed by clicking on a link from the main substance record.
- _____ Searched for by numeric ranges.
- _____ Used to refine a substance answer set by specific values of the property/ies.
- _____ Used to analyze a substance answer set.
Question 5: In SciFinder Web, predicted properties of a substance may be...
The following two questions require searching on SciFinder Scholar or SciFinder Web. You may do them on your own before class, or do them in class on lecture day before handing them in.
Question 6: Perform a search by substance identifier for the drug Plendil. What types of information are available from the substance record for Plendil?
- _____ CAS Registry Number, alternate names and molecular formula.
- _____ Commercial availability info.
- _____ Reactions in which Plendil is a reactant.
- _____ An experimental melting point.
- _____ An experimental pKa.
Question 7: Again, referring to the substance record for Plendil, which of the following roles have Plendil references associated with them?.
- _____ Adverse Effects, including Toxicity.
- _____ Analytical Study.
- _____ Combinatorial Study.
- _____ Crystal Structure.
- _____ Formation, non=preparative.
