Art Collections
Art Collection Scope
The art collection, housed on the first floor of the Arts Library, includes publications on architecture, sculpture, drawing, painting, prints, decorative arts, artistic photography, and interdisciplinary works on the arts, covering all cultures and time periods.
The collection consists of over 200,000 volumes, including more than 110,000 books, journals, videos, microforms, and CD-ROMs as well as 95,000 art exhibition catalogs.
Collection strengths include medieval illumination, Northern and Italian Renaissance art, American art and architecture, and Chinese painting and calligraphy.

Special collections in the Arts Library do not circulate unless otherwise noted.
Art Exhibition Catalogs
Items from this collection of over 95,000 exhibition, collection, and sales catalogs are listed in PEGASUS.
To find the most recently acquired exhibition catalogs in the collection, do a subject search for "exhibition catalogs" in the
Pegasus New Titles Catalog.
Artists' Books
The Arts Library holds approximately 900 titles and other materials relating to artists' books. The Hobart O. Skofield Printers Collection, housed in the Department of Special Collections in Davidson Library, also includes artists’ books, livres d'artiste, and other examples of fine printing.
Auction Catalogs
The UCSB Arts Library is the UC depository for auction catalogs. The most recent five years of Sotheby's and Christie's are housed on-site; earlier catalogs are stored in the off-campus Library Annex. A small number of these catalogs, as well as the Knoedler Library on Microfiche collection of retrospective sales catalogs, are indexed on SCIPIO.

** Works on the technical and scientific aspects of photography are housed in the Science & Engineering Library on the 2nd floor of Davidson Library.

Art collection materials are housed on the first floor of the Arts Library. The following is a brief description of location codes you will encounter in the online catalog, PEGASUS:
- Stacks: main collection, mostly circulating materials
- Oversize: larger materials shelved at the end of stacks ranges
- AEC: non-circulating art exhibition catalogs
- Cage: special collection materials that must be retrieved from the closed stacks and may be used in-library only with photo ID
- Reference: non-circulating dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc., located in the Reference Room
- Reference Blue: frequently-used “ready reference” resources
- Reference Green: auction and sales indexes
- Reference Tan: copyright-free clip art images
- Reference Orange: periodical indexes, general encyclopedias and foreign-language dictionaries
- Circulation Desk: CD-ROMs and reserve materials
- Microfiche: in the cabinets in the Reference Room
- Microfilm: on the 1st floor of the Arts Library (Room #1416 - former camera/typing room)
- Video: on the 2nd floor in the Music Collection

New Library Materials
New books and exhibition catalogs are shelved in the lobby for ten days in a constantly-rotating display. A selection of the most recent issues of journals is displayed in the Stacks area. Recommendations for acquisition of new books or journals are welcome.
